Big 12 Week 9 Review

The Big 12 saw a match-up of two of its top teams this week, while the conference favorite once again won big.

The big game that everyone was looking forward to in the Big 12 this week was the game between Texas Tech and Oklahoma. The two went back and forth all night with Oklahoma eventually pulling it out 38-30. Oklahoma looked bad on offense in the first quarter, trailing 7-0 after one, but came alive after that, scoring two second quarter touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead into the half. The teams went back in forth in the second half, but Oklahoma proved to be too much for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders faced their toughest test of the year by far and looked alright. They didn't come away with the W, but they still played very well against one of the best teams in the country. They still have Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Texas left this year, but they are good enough to compete in all of them. Oklahoma played their best game since the win over Notre Dame back in week 5. They had a tough loss to Texas and didn't play up to expectations in a win over Kansas last week, but with a big win over an undefeated, top 10 team, the Sooners are right back in the race for the Big 12 championship. They have a huge Thursday night game with Baylor in two weeks and that game will be huge in deciding the Big 12 champion.

Baylor again scored a ton of points, looking like the Oregon of the southwest in a 59-14 win over Kansas. Baylor has now scored at least 59 points in 6 of its 7 games this season and looks to continue that as they go on. The only real test they have had so far was against Kansas State, a game in which they only scored 35 points. The Bears have a bye week in week 10 before the Thursday night game in Waco that will be the defining point of Baylor's season. Kansas drops to 2-5 (0-4) with the loss, once again establishing themselves as the Big 12's worst team. They just can't seem to get a win as they have now gone almost three years without winning a Big 12 game.

Texas moved up to 4-0 in Conference play after a rough start to the season. They rolled to a 30-7 win over an overrated TCU team after a mid game three hour weather delay. The Longhorns are tied with Baylor atop the Big 12 standings and are right in the mix for a conference title. They have two winnable games upcoming against Kansas and West Virginia, but they end the season with games against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Baylor. TCU was one of the favorites to win the conference in the preseason, but after an injury to QB Casey Pachall, the team had to turn to Trevone Boykin, who wasn't quite what the team needed to win. They now are in a tough situation with a 1-4 conference record and Baylor still left.

Oklahoma State dismantled Iowa State Saturday. Iowa State it tied with Kansas at the bottom of the conference, but has came very close in almost every loss until last week against Baylor and this week, when they lost 58-27 to Oklahoma State. Iowa State hopes to not just go back to their ways of coming close, but also get a few wins before the season is over. Oklahoma State continues to improve following the week 5 loss to West Virginia with yet another win. They are still 6-1 (3-1) which has them tied with Texas Tech and Oklahoma near the top of the conference. they quite easily control their own destiny, as they still have yet to play Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Texas.

Kansas State continued their inconsistency Saturday in a win over West Virginia. I was a tale of two halfs as Kansas State came back from down 12-7 early in the 3rd quarter to score 28 unanswered and win 35-12. It was an odd mix at QB as Daniel Sams, usually used for option running, completed all 8 of his throws for 93 yards and a TD, while their other QB, Jake Waters, usually known for his passing ability, ran 10 times for 55 yards. West Virginia has not played a complete game since the win over Oklahoma State a month ago and hope to get on the right track next week when they go on the road against TCU.
